Three Legs Good

Name: Lollipop
Age: 4 months' old

Lollipop is one of a litter of 8 mongrel puppies that were rescued from a rural part of Singapore after their mother disappeared, leaving them to fend for themselves. She is sweet, shy and smart, and was toilet-trained at 2 months of age! Now, she has already learned basic commands like sit, fetch and shake paw. Lollipop's front legs are bowlegged, a deformity since birth. However, this does not impair her and she can run, jump and play like any other dog. Lollipop shows you that you don't have to be perfect to be beautiful. Let her soulful eyes melt your heart and win you over!

...and many more!

The pets you have just seen will be at the Pet Expo 2014 along with their friends (who's a bit camera shy which explains why they're not here)! These lovely pets are all looking for forever homes!

Pet Care Tips: The sweetest deal: A popcorning Chinchilla

If you've already seen a chinchilla in action before, you'd know that this adorable pet is constantly on the move. While sociable and enjoys interacting with people, the chin is not one you'd expect to stay still (or roll on its back) while you pat him. In fact, rubbing/tickling, aka "chin scratches" might be more attractive than petting to a chinchilla. Here's some sweet spots of a chinchilla that will get them all happy and loved - tummy, under the chin, along the jawline, behind the ears and/or on the forehead.

While scratching your chin, it is typical that he vocalises in response. To another chinchilla, these chirps or gruff act as a guide to their groomer to scratch them on the right spot/s. It takes time and requires empathy and awareness to discern what your chin's sounds mean, exactly what he's trying to tell you, and individuals do vary somewhat in their communication sounds. Watch both your chin's body language and sound variation while you're grooming him and this will help guide you. Once your chin is being happily scratched, he'll be quiet and completely absorbed in your perfected technique. It's also normal if your chin nips you a little while grooming; it's his way of showing you affection.

Ready for the sweetest deal? A happy, secure and well-loved chinchilla does some crazy acts. The more active, wild and crazy a chin is, the more happy he is. The ultimate expressions of chinchilla joy and happiness include: "wall surfing" (bouncing off walls) and the mid-air jump and twitch, sometimes called "popcorning".

We hope the next time you meet a chinchilla or play with your chin, he will surf the wall and popcorn for you!

Pet Care Tips: Gerbil's Tank

Gerbils are one of the less popular pets in Singapore. These adorable critters do best when they live in pairs (of the same sex) or more as they're very social animals. Here's a short video clip on how you can build a really cosy and fun gerbil tank for your new friends! Remember to clean out your gerbils' tank once a week to keep their living environment clean!

Post-Event Highlights: AVA's First Free Pet Health Check!

On Saturday, 15 February 2014, AVA held its first Free Pet Health Check series at Jurong Spring Community Club. Around 75 pets that have been pre-registered got themselves checked by a team of professional vets. In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights from the half-day event!

1A resident who has pre-registered her pooch at the sign-in counter.

3Student volunteers from Temasek Polytechnic were on duty to assist with the event.

Beat the Monday Blues: The 'Yes' Bunny!

Talking to pets can be therapeutic. Though we don't speak the same language as our pets, that does not mean they don't understand what we mean. Watch this YouTube video and be impressed by this rabbit's response to his owner. (:

The owner must have spent a lot of time to train his rabbit. Training requires a lot of patience and commitment. Take this training process as an opportunity for you to talk to your pet

New Beginnings: Second Chances

Today is a day of Love! It also marks the last entry of our "New Beginnings" series.

For this special occasion, we have Miss Christine Bernadette from Causes for Animals to share a special story about Popeye, an abandoned 10-year-old dog found a family who loves him regardless of age and less-than-perfect health.

We visited an abandoned "shelter" a few months back to assess some of the dogs the shelter wanted to be rid of. The circumstances of what happened to this shelter are murky and we don't want to speculate.

The abandoned shelter

The abandoned shelter

There we met some of the dogs, which we were told, would be put down if nobody claimed them by the end of the day. Popeye, a 10-year-old Maltese/Poodle mix, caught our eyes due to the sordid condition he was in and his awful lifeless expression.

We took in Popeye and two other dogs. As Popeye had severely infected ears, we had to clean his ears regularly. He was also often in extreme pain and we had to be extra patient with him.

Cleaning Popeye's ear

Cleaning Popeye's ear

Despite putting up adoption adverts for Popeye on our web site and other adoption portals, we did not receive any calls to adopt him. In hopes of finding Popeye a good home, we decided to bring him down to AVA's "Animals & Our Community" roadshow at Changi City Point Mall in November 2013.

When it comes to adoptions, we look out for potential adopters with patience, time and lots of love. The potential adopter's entire family must also meet the dog and spend time interacting with him (e.g. through a walk, shower, etc).

Our volunteers, Popeye and two other puppies at AVA's

Our volunteers, Popeye and two other puppies at AVA's "Animals & Our Community" roadshow

Angel and her family had come by to the mall for dinner and somehow Popeye and his story caught their attention. They are very kind to look beyond his age and are so happy to have him. In fact, they just want to make the rest of his senior years the best years he ever had. Angel's kids, all 6 of them LOVE Popeye!

I am so glad Popeye now has a family. It was really a blessing he was there at the event and caught Angel and her family's eye that Sunday evening. If it wasn't for AVA's roadshow, Popeye and Angel and family would never have met and Popeye wouldn't have a chance to win their hearts.

From a caged dog to pampered pooch! The knowledge that senior or sick dogs still have an opportunity to find a good home is what keeps us going.

Pet Care Tips: How to tame your hamster

Bitten by your new hamster friend? Maybe he's a little shy, or perhaps your hands smells tasty like a treat!

In today's Pet Care Tips, let us share with you a YouTube video that provides some insights on how to tame your little friend. Fret not if you don't own a bath tub (most of us don't!); all you need is a safe little enclosed corner (drains are covered, no small holes or gaps under cabinets, etc.) to do this.

Saying a prayer at mealtime is practised by some humans. However, it looks like our furry friends want to have a take in it as well. Get ready to smile with today's video!

What are the dogs praying for? We think they're praying for better treatment for their counterparts who may be going through hardships now. In the spirit of Valentine's Day, show some love to our furry friends and remind ourselves to take good care of them.
